Lorton is dripping with history. Gunston Hall, a Georgian-style mansion that was once the home of George Mason, is on first stop on the list. The National Historic Landmark is laden with ornate touches and decor that were unusual for the 1790s when it was constructed. Another two historical stops are the Workhouse Prison Museum and the Lucy Burns Museum. The second of these is located in the Workhouse Arts Center. The center also hosts over 100 annual exhibits, 300 performances, and 800 arts education classes annually. Plus, it plays host to events like Workhouse Fireworks and Brewfest.

A theme for our Virginia town lists are the breathtaking sights and natural attractions — it's no different for Lorton. Occoquan Regional Park sits along a tributary of Potomac River. This peaceful park includes several historical spots within the park, events space, water activities and a number of trails. Newington Heights Park is in town too, home to a fun playground and sports fields. For 7 miles of horse trails, check out Meadowood. The park also has over 13 miles of hiking trails and over 6 miles of mountain bike trails, 2 fishing ponds and over 800 acres of forests and meadows.
Transportation
Located in the Southern part of Fairfax County, Lorton offers easy access to I-95. Bus service includes the Fairfax County Connector which provides bus service to Metro-rail and Metro Bus stations. Also located in Lorton is a VRE stop. The VRE, The Virginia Railway Express, offers commuter train service into Alexandria and D.C. And finally, for those out of town trips, you will also find an Amtrak Auto Train stop in Lorton.
