Alexandria is a Virginia town that sits on the northeastern tip of the Northern Virginia region. Alexandria includes Old Town Alexandria, a beautiful and historic city established in the 18th century, and numerous communities in Fairfax County. Beyond the charm of Old Town, Alexandria is home to Kingstowne with 5300 homes in a vibrant planned community, architecturally significant Hollin Hills, Cameron Station and so many other wonderful communities. Alexandria is south of D.C.’s downtown district, sharing its borders with the Potomac River. Mom’s Organic Market, an up-and-coming organic grocery chain, is located just off Mt. Vernon Ave and there’s Let’s Meat on the Avenue, an “unpretentious butcher shop” with a wide selection of meat and dairy items. For some sizzle to your Saturday night, head over to The Birchmere. This venue is no stranger to the famously-talented including comedy, folk, rock, and country shows. Also in town, locals can enjoy a robust art gallery and dance performances at The Athenaeum.

The city is known for its natural beauty, encompassing around 900 acres of parks and dedicated outdoor greenspace. Founders, Harborside, Jones Point, Tide Lock, Oronoco, Waterfront, King Street — each of these parks offer waterfront enjoyment for the Potomac River, including some with kayaking and canoeing opportunities. Have a four-legged kid? Locals can check out Montgomery Park for a fenced, off-leash dog run area. For those with children, playgrounds abound and can be found at Armory Tot Lot, Ben Brenman Park, Windmill Hill, and others. Not to be missed is Fairfax County’s largest park, Huntley Meadows. Huntley Meadows Park is home to forests, wetlands and meadows and is a favorite for spotting wildlife.
Transportation
Alexandria offers excellent transportation options. There are two Metro-rail lines that run in Alexandria (Blue and Yellow) and numerous Metro-rail stations throughout Alexandria to include multiple stations in Old Town Alexandria, Eisenhower and Van Dorn Stations in Fairfax County. Commuter bus services are also available and you will also find easy access to both I-395 and The Capital Beltway for quick access into D.C. Alexandria is also home to Reagan National Airport!
